Student drowns at Camps Bay

A search is to continue this morning for a South Korean student feared drowned at Camps Bay.

The 19-year-old, studying for the past week at the LAL Language School, had been with a group of about 20 students at the beach.

He had been due to live and study here for nearly a year.

The NSRI's Mark Thompson said Bakoven volunteers had been alerted to a drowning in progress about 5pm yesterday and launched a rescue boat.

A rescue helicopter was also dispatched.

Thompson said it appeared the 19-year-old had been swimming with a friend, a French student, when they were caught in a strong rip current and were both swept out to sea.

He said the Frenchman was able to swim to shore and was found on the beach by rescuers.

Thompson said the police dive unit and NSRI volunteers would continue the search this morning.

The Korean Embassy were being supported by the Department of International affairs and Co-operation to inform the family of the missing teenager.

Thompson said the teenager had arrived in SA a week ago on a language tour with the LAL Language School. A group of students from the school had yesterday been together on the beach.
