While it is suspected that the missing man may be suicidal our only aim is to help the man.
We are appealing to motorists to Chapman’s Peak Drive who may have seen the man or perhaps even given him a lift over the weekend between Saturday night and today....or anyone with information on the current whereabouts of Nigel.
Concerned members of the public alerted the emergency services late on Saturday afternoon after noticing the man wandering near to a cliff face on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak below Chapman’s Peak Drive.
A Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services rescue team, NSRI Hout Bay, NSRI Kommetjie, the SA Police Services and WSAR (Wilderness Search and Rescue) searched throughout Saturday night for the missing man on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak.
NSRI Hout Bay launched their rescue craft MTU Nadine Gordimer and NSRI Kommetjie launched their rescue craft Spirit of Winelands to aid in the search (from the sea side of the mountain).
During the search the man, who is asthmatic but had left his asthma pump at home and who may have taken an excessive dose of medication, was spotted just before last light, wandering on the slopes, (spotted by one of the NSRI rescue craft), but by the time the land based rescue party arrived at the location of the sighting he had again disappeared and it was suspected that he may have been trying to evade being rescued or helped.
Nightfall hampered the search which continued until after midnight and no further sign of the man was found despite thermal imaging goggles and night vision goggles being used by rescuers.
Metro and WSAR used high-angle ropes to reach some barely accessible sections on the slopes.
A Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter, Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services, WSAR, Police and the NSRI resumed the search at first light on Sunday and a Police helicopter has joined in the search during this morning (Monday) but there is still no further sign of the man.
Our hope is that he may have returned to the road during the night and he may have hiked a lift with an unsuspecting motorist and while all efforts are being employed to find him we want to appeal to motorists and the public in general if they have seen or assisted him in any way they should please contact their nearest police station or the Police on 10111 or NSRI Communications at 0823803800.
