Monday, 29th November 2010 at 12:00am | Under News. The biggest challenge facing a successful response to a sea rescue emergency is any delay caused in SEA RESCUE AUTHORITIES receiving the call for help.
A delay of only a few seconds in the activation of sea rescue resources in any sea rescue emergency could determine the difference between life and death.
The NSRI are urging members of the public living along the coast or living in coastal towns and cities, and holiday makers visiting the coast, this summer, to save their nearest sea rescue emergency phone number handy.
Attached is a map and colour coded list of the sea rescue emergency phone numbers that cover the South African coastline.
Sea Rescue (Saldanha Bay): 022-7141726
Sea Rescue (Cape Town): 021-4493500
Sea Rescue (Mossel Bay): 044-6046271
Sea Rescue (Port Elizabeth): 041-5071911
Sea Rescue (East London): 043-7002100
Sea Rescue (Durban): 031-3618567
Sea Rescue (Richards Bay): 035-7531991 or 035-9053401 or 035-9043444
By phoning the sea rescue emergency number to report a sea rescue emergency means that all of the rescue resources responsible for handling a sea rescue emergency are immediately activated.
NSRI rescue stations are also found on 3 inland Dams.
NSRI Vaal Dam – 0836265128
NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam – 0829905961
NSRI – Germiston (Victoria Lake) – 0824416989
When you phone to report a sea rescue emergency – give your contact number and name, the exact location of the emergency, the nature of the emergency and please stay near to your phone and expect the responding sea rescue authorities to call you back to obtain clearer information and clarity of the unfolding emergency.
