Momadi/Okele Trial

Four interpreters will be needed to conquer the foreign language barrier when five men charged with a host of burglaries in Camps Bay and the rape of a German tourist go on trial in the Western Cape High Court, says a Cape Argus report.

The men - Luis Momadi, Arnaldo Faife, Rogerio Laice, Sabastine Okele and Thamsanqa Mafuya - have appeared before Judge President John Hlophe for a pre-trial hearing. The state advocate said a number of interpreters - including Portugese and Shangaan speakers - would be needed for the trial. Issues surrounding defence lawyers also needed to be straightened out before the trial began. The men face charges of racketeering, housebreaking, housebreaking and theft, housebreaking and robbery, and rape, relating to 21 burglaries that occurred in the area during 2008. The report notes the men are to remain in custody at Pollsmoor Prison until their next court appearance on 27 August.
